Acer is getting ready to release an new Chromebook, Acer CB5-312T with MediaTek MT8173 inside.
Acer has been with Chrome OS ever since the first set of commercial Chromebooks. This makes it interesting to watch what Acer is up to in the post-Play Store Chrome OS world.
MediaTek MT8173 Powered Chromebook
The latest rumors based on a tweet from Roland Quandt and also listings on various online shops, the latest from Acer is a Chromebook with 13 inch full HD touchscreen display, 4GB Of RAM, and a quad-core processor. This will be the first Chromebook to feature a MediaTek processor.
MediaTek MT8173 comes with a quad-core chip with two ARM Cortex-A72 CPU cores, two Cortex-A53 cores, and PowerVR GX6250 graphics.
Other features include 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, and 16GB and 32GB storage options. I am still wondering what this 16GB storage will mean for Chromebooks when Google Play Store comes to all eligible devices. Android apps use a lot of space for offline storage.
There is no information on the form factor of this Chromebook, so we will have to wait till the release or more leaks to confirm if this will have a tablet mode with 360 degree hinge.
My assumption is that MediaTek processor will help Acer sell these Chromebooks for a very competitive price. They have mastered the art of making affordable Chromebooks, and this might yet another tweak to become the leaders in Chromebooks with Google Play Store built-in.
Expect a big Android icon on all the marketing copy for this new Chromebook (and all the future Chromebooks actually!)
